Genital warts are a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease mainly caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, typically HPV 6 and 11. Different types of HPVs cause different types of warts that may grow on various parts of the body such as hands and feet or around the mouth and genital area. Warts appear as single bumps or in clusters, some having a cauliflower structure. They look like small stalks, occur in clusters and sometimes can be very tiny. In men they are usually seen on the tip of the penis or around the anus, whereas in women they are found on the outside and inside of vagina, and around the anus.

The main cause of genital warts is HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). HPV, which is commonly known as the "wart virus", is a microscopic virus particle that infects the top layers of our skin or mucous membrane. Excessive consumption of tobacco and alcohol may form genital warts up to some extent. Stressful lifestyle may also lead to genital warts. Sometimes over dosage of contraceptic pills, unsafe sex, sex at an early age and sex with multiple partners may cause it difficult to get rid of genital warts.

To confirm the presence of HPV, one may go for a routine Pap smear or a biopsy. Several other laboratory tests are also available.

There can be a number of symptoms of genital warts, some of them are: difficulty in passing urine, difficulty in swallowing food, itching around sex organs, abnormal vaginal bleeding, flu-like illness, headache, swollen glands, small white/gray/yellow uneven growths around the sex organ and anus.

Although there is no hundred percent effective treatment for HPV but some remedies are being applied to get rid of the warts. The treatment of genital warts ranges from medications to minor surgery. The viable medical treatments are:

Cryotherapy which freezes off the warts with liquid nitrogen.
Wart tissue is often destroyed by the use of acids. However, this method of getting rid of genital warts is best supervised by a health care provider. Combinations of salicylic and lactic acids are often used. Creams with this solution on them are widely available and can be an effective solution. Genital warts creams like Imiquimod which helps to destroy the warts, Podophyllin; a very useful gel is applied to the affected area only by a doctor or nurse, Podofilox cream for external genital warts and so on.
Surgical excision to cut off the warts.
Interferon injections where a doctor may try an interferon injection for getting rid of the genital warts. Interferon is a chemical that our bodies make. It helps our immune system fight infection. An injection of interferon into the wart may help our body's immune system fight the virus that is causing the wart
TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) applied under a doctor's observation.
Laser therapy, where laser light is applied to destroy the warts.
Electro desiccation, where an electronic current is used to super-heat a needle which burns the wart cells
Sometimes a combination of vitamins and minerals, herbal teas, antiviral oils are also used to get rid of genital warts.
Even one may go for natural treatments in order to get rid of genital warts. Peeling and halving a garlic clove and then rubbing it on the affected area twice daily may help to reduce the warts. Herbal tinctures, or suppositories which can be bought form a naturalist store is also another option.
Another home remedy is to use PEROXIDE (H2O2) 3% right on the warts with a cotton swab. Even sometimes the vinegar and cotton with tape works, but it is always advisable to visit a physician.

Unfortunately there is no way to predict whether the warts will grow or disappear. Sometimes the warts may reappear even after treatment where as sometimes they can just disappear. That is why the patients of genital warts are required to follow up with their doctors on a regular routine.
