Treatment For Genital Warts – The Sooner, The Better
Genital warts are a highly contagious infection caused by the Human Papillomavirus. Better known as HPV, the virus spreads through sexual contact. It is so infectious than even the slightest physical contact with a carrier is more than enough to allow the virus to set up shop in its new “home”.
Treating genital warts differs depending on circumstances. The main factors surrounding the kind of treatment a person might be undergoing are:
1. Where the genital warts are. Sometimes, if a person is lucky, the virus has only infected the outer parts of the genitals. At other times, the infection may not be visible from the outside as the warts are on the inner lips of the vagina, for instance, or inside the anus. For women, genital warts can spread even to the cervix.
2. The extent of the infection. How big an area has been infected by genital warts will determine whether or not the medication will be mild or aggressive.
3. The depth of the infection. Once the HPV has arrived at a location, it manifests and starts growing by rooting its domain within the skin. Sometimes, genital warts cream may not be effective simply because the roots have gone deep into the skin. This can only be discovered through preliminary treatment, however, and only after it is proven that there are deep HPV roots in the system will a doctor be able to recommend a more drastic course of action.
Treatment for genital warts are immediate and often, temporary, particularly for those who do not see a need for any lifestyle or habit changes. Genital warts can recur at any time in the near future even for those who take every precaution as it also depends on the sexual partner one is with.
HPV gets passed on from one infected person to another and while it is easy to refrain from having any sexual encounters with a known infected partner, sometimes there are no visible signs for a person with genital warts. In fact, a man or woman can be a carrier of the virus without even showing any growths or blisters – which is why it is difficult to tell if anyone is infected or not.
There is no one treatment for genital warts. Generally, the treatment is for the immediate infection and needs a certain amount of follow-up over time. The virus will have to be cleared out of the system slowly through a series of medical visits until they are finally reduced to a level that the body can detox naturally. In short, treating genital warts will require some amount of commitment in terms of time, cost and subsequently, lifestyle change.
At the initial stages, genital warts cream is often used. Application can be made by the patient themselves or the doctor, depending on the seriousness of the infection. Patients are allowed to apply genital warts creams on their own for milder infections. For hard-to-reach spots or severe outbreaks, doctors or nurses are the ones applying the medication as they may need some professional skills.
A more permanent treatment for genital warts, like laser procedure and surgery, can be recommended for very severe infections. They are also reserved for those with frequent recurring infections, particularly within a long period of treatment when many modes of medication have been used and the infection still does not clear up. This normally serves as a sign that the HPV has implanted its roots deep within the body and has to be extracted literally.
While a permanent solution to removing genital warts, laser procedures and surgeries, unfortunately, have a great tendency to leave some form of permanent scarring. They are, however, quite painless and usually done under local anesthetic. Laser procedures are also expensive and thus, usually reserved for infections that cover a larger area or infinitely stubborn.
A person undergoing treatment for genital warts will also need to listen to advice from his or her medical practitioner. Whether it is advice for a total lifestyle and habit change, or counseling for someone who has a partner from whom the virus originated from, a person must understand that being infected with genital warts basically carves the future of his or her sex life. Being more careful in choosing sexual partners, for instance and using condoms whenever there is sexual activity must be the path to take to prevent others from being infected.
