One of the lesser known (or at least, lesser mentioned) sexually transmitted infections is genital warts.  Much like normal warts, these are little clumps of growths concentrated to the genitals.  Just like the common warts, they are non-fatal but unlike them, genital warts are highly contagious.  With just one slight contact, the Human Papillomavirus or HPV can be passed on, which makes it one of the more difficult infections to contain.  Fortunately, genital warts treatment is easily available.

The first step in genital wart treatment is a visit to the doctor at the first suspicious sign.  Like most other diseases, earliest possible treatment is the best way to go about curing oneself of any ailment.  Unfortunately, this is easier said than done.
Most people are embarrassed about having to admit to having genital warts and a somewhat questionable sexual life.  Others are embarrassed about showing such ugly growths on their most private parts to an outsider.

Some of the reasons why you should get an early diagnosis are:
1.    Milder genital wart treatment may be prescribed.  The genital wart medication will be much less abrasive than those that would have to be used for when the virus has spread.  Using milder medication also mean a smaller chance of permanent scarring.
2.    Lesser chance of the virus affecting other still-unaffected parts of the genitals.  Like all other virus, HPV also aims to spread itself within the confined area.  Earlier detection and diagnosis means a smaller area of your genitals is infected.  This makes for easier treatment and possibly less visible scars.
3.    You would also have a smaller chance of infecting your partner.  In cases of sexually transmitted infections, be responsible enough to contain an infection if it is within your powers to do so.  Knowingly infecting others is chargeable legally in most countries and if you are charged with it, you would not only be seeking genital warts treatment but also ostracized by those who are in the know.
4.    Time for a lifestyle change.  Use the diagnosis as a wake-up call for more responsible sexual behavior and preferences.  As genital warts can be passed on among heterosexuals as easily as homosexuals, all that is needed is a more responsible attitude towards all sexual activity in general.  Practicing safe sex like using condoms, for instance, should be a necessity for all partners whose sexual histories you are unfamiliar with.  Personal hygiene, like washing up before and after sex, should also be brought up a notch to ensure the virus does not spread.

Getting treatment for a more severe case of genital warts is no funny matter.  In most cases, it is more painful and requires some form of time commitment.  Naturally, this translates to a higher cost for genital wart medication.  The inconvenience of taking medication for a specific period of time and the cost that comes with such inconveniences is the main reason why it is important that you get genital warts treatment as soon as possible.

Once diagnosed and in treatment, your doctor may find that the growths have expanded beyond both your expectations.  While on the surface, your infection may not look like anything to be overly concerned about, a more thorough inspection may indicate a more serious viral spread.  Your doctor may find that the HPV has deep roots in other parts of your genitals or in other lesser-seen areas.  Treatment is still possible, albeit a more aggressive or even invasive one, so do not worry.  Remember, however, the more aggressive the treatment, the higher the chances of it being uncomfortable.
Aggressive genital wart treatment includes somewhat abrasive creams.  These are topical creams that are applied only to the damaged areas to reduce extensive scarring.  Most can be applied in the privacy of your home.  These include:

-    Imiquinod or Aldara
-    Podofilox gel (also known as Candylox)
-    Sinecatechins or Veregen

Of these, the first two are proven to be very effective.

Any other genital warts medication more aggressive than the three will need a doctor’s help in application.  These would be used in more sensitive areas of the genitals and in hard-to-reach places.

While undergoing genital warts treatment, it is imperative that you refrain from any sexual activity until the area is completely healed.  Something to take noted of is that even if you are totally cured of the genital warts, you can still infect someone with HPV.
